Tulum Mexico and Hostal Charlys !!

I left Valladolid and headed back to the coast to the town of Tulum Mexico. Tulum has become very popular in the last few years and is expanding fast. I stayed at a new hostel called Hostal Charlys. I was welcomed in by a young lad who spoke very good english but that was the end of the welcome reception. The lady of the house ignored her guests, i mean blatantly ignored her guests, no information was displayed anywhere apart from one local map pinned right in the middle of the otherwise empty notice board. I think the family had opened up their home to become a hostel but hadn’t quite got use to the fact that there would be other people living in their house !! I went down for breakfast the next day (which was included in the price i paid) and said ‘Hola !’ (Hello) to the lady who was cooking, she mumbled something then ignored me completely. I went away and came back 15 minutes later and said hello again and asked about breakfast by suggesting i was eating and drinking something. She scowled at me and turned away ! So off i went to buy breakfast and when i returned she presented me with a toasted sandwich. I have no idea what was going on but she really didn’t seem to like anybody. When i spoke to an Italian girl who was staying in the same dorm as me she told me not to worry as she was rude and ignored everybody anyway and not to take it personally.  They’ve got a long way to go before becoming a welcoming hostel i think but another one of those stories for the blog !

I had decided to cycle to the nearby ruins and even though i had agreed to rent a bike from the hostel the night before, there was now nobody to talk to to get it ! As i had been delayed by breakfast and then finding somebody to rent a bike from i was late arriving at the ruins, it was already busy and i decided to leave it until later in the afternoon after advice from the girl in the hostel. I cycled to the local public beach nearby to swim in the clear blue warm waters.

I returned to the ruins at about 3 o’clock and there was no queue for a ticket, almost all the coach tours had departed. They certainly picked a great place to build some temples, right on the cliffs next to the sea, some great views.
